Story Island Reviews super review of Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo!

A year 4 pupil from ETHELBERT ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL wrote this fantastic review of the junior fiction 2018 Summer Reading Challenge story Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo by Alice Hemming, and illustrated by Kathryn Durst on the Story Island Reviews site:

One of the most heart-pounding moments in the book was at the rock pool as big as a swimming-pool. Ronnie was streaking on the rocks wearing pants that said Friday on them, even though it was Monday. Everyone was worried that he was going to jump in because this is where the Ichthyosaur lives and Ronnie can’t swim. He jumped in and Arlo counted in his head to 3 but he didn’t come out… read the book to find out what happened next!!

If you like exciting, fun stories you should read it too.

My favourite part of the book was when the class saw all of the Dinosaurs. There were lots of different dinosaurs and one of them ate Paige’s hairband!

My favourite character was Arlo because he wrote things in his note book that were funny and he was brave.’

Thank you!

‘Lots of fun’ Red Reading Hub enjoys Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo!

Mrs Ogg website banner RGB

Jill at Red Reading Hub recently enjoyed our Summer Reading Challenge 2018 junior fiction title Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo by Alice Hemming with illustrations by Kathryn Durst:

Is the outing a success and do they arrive back at school with all seventeen children plus teacher safe and sound? And, are they allowed to go to that eagerly anticipated end-of-year party? You’ll have to get hold of a copy of this action packed story and find out.

With its twisting-turning plot, it’s certainly lots of fun. Packed with zany illustrations by Kathyrn Durst and promises of further adventures to come, let me just say, there’s a whole lot more to class 4X than previous teachers had thought: Mrs Ogg manages to unearth a whole lot of hidden talents therein.’

With such great reviews the book is flying off the shelves!

‘Eventful story that is brought to life with plenty of lively illustrations’ The Letterpress Project reviews Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo!

Karen at The Letterpress Project recently posted a cracking review for Summer Reading Challenge 2018 title Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo by Alice Hemming with illustrations by Kathryn Durst:

Apart from liking Arlo and the other interesting characters, I really enjoyed this eventful story that is brought to life with plenty of lively illustrations. It is packed with interesting information about dinosaurs and also provides opportunities for talking about what happens in schools, and what doesn’t. I rather think that most children would like a teacher like Mrs Ogg who has faith in their abilities and gives lots of encouragement, although perhaps she is a little bit too unconventional for more than a few weeks. Luckily she is soon followed by Miss Pythia who is going to be their teacher the following year. She seems very promising because, as Arlo writes in his notebook:

We’ve just met her but I can tell that things are going to be ‘ interesting’ She seems to know exactly what is happening without looking. Almost as if she has special powers …’

I think that there will probably be another story on the horizon to tell us much more about this.

Thank you!

‘I was impressed by how suited this was to younger middle-grade readers’ Book Murmuration reviews our new junior fiction!

Louise at Book Murmuration has just posted two lovely reviews for our new junior fiction titles:

Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo by Alice Hemming with illustrations by Kathryn Durst:

A lovely chapter book which reminded me of Mr Majeika. A class of children comes together under the leadership of a less-than-normal teacher. This will be popular with children who dream of having an adventure instead of an ordinary school day. I love the illustrations and design.’

Dino Wars: Rise of the Raptors by Dan Metcalf with illustrations by Aaron Blecha:

An intriguing dystopia for the very youngest readers. This would be lovely for newly confident readers who are ready for a more involved plot. Although I have read similar quest stories, I was impressed by how suited this was to younger middle-grade readers. The main characters make a great team, and I love the set-up and backstory.’

Many thanks, Louise!

Armadillo Magazine has posted a great review for Summer Reading Challenge 2018 book Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo by Alice Hemming, illustrated by Kathryn Durst:

[The book] finds the completely unruly, disobedient and unteachable 4X in need of a teacher who can teach them, welcome Mrs Ogg and the adventure of a lifetime!  A trip to the zoo can’t possibly be the answer can it?  Well when it is no ordinary zoo and Mrs Ogg is no ordinary supply teacher, yes, it can!  A hilarious adventure with plenty of twists and turns …’

We are so glad you enjoyed it!

Maverick Books selected for the Summer Reading Challenge 2018!

We are delighted to see today The Reading Agency announced that two of our books are selected for the Summer Reading Challenge 2018. The theme next year is Mischief Makers!

Arlo, Mrs Ogg and the Dinosaur Zoo by Alice Hemming with illustrations by Kathryn Durst is our second junior fiction title by Alice. It follows the story of Arlo and his best friends Daisy-May and Nathan as he tries to keep the infamous class 4X out of trouble.  After the last one ran away screaming, they have a new supply teacher. Maybe it’s her animal skin dress or bone earrings but Mrs Ogg doesn’t seem to be quite what anyone is expecting…
