‘Like a ray of sunshine’ High praise for new Turquoise band Early Reader The Oojamaflip

Sarah at My Book Corner has posted a wonderful review for new Turquoise band Early Reader by Lou Treleaven The Oojamaflip:

Lou Treleaven’s fantastically named book takes us on journey with our favourite professor as the reader considers what is needed to invent – a vivid imagination, an eye for science and sheer determination. With Julia Patton’s illustrations brightening up our literary world and detailing Professor’s inventions in a fun and informative way, this book is like a ray of sunshine.’

Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip selected for Summer Reading Challenge 2016!

Professor McQuark will be inspiring more children than ever this summer as Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip has been selected for the 2016 Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge, put together by The Reading Agency.

Professor MCQuark LR RGB JPEG

This year’s reading challenge is linking up with the global year-long Roald Dahl celebrations honouring the beloved storyteller. The 72 Books selected for the challenge have been chosen based on 6 key Dahl themes including, invention, friendship, adventure, langwitch (wordplay), champions and mischief. So we can see why Professor McQuark stood out!

Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip features a female scientist and inventor who creates a wonderful device called the Oojamaflip. It wins over the crowds at the town’s Science Fair but the question everyone is asking is, what does an Oojamaflip do?

Layout 1

The story is written by debut author, Lou Treleaven, in brilliantly crafted rhyme and encourages all children to be inventive and follow their dreams. British illustrator, Julia Patton has brought her wonderful sense of quirkiness and charm to the illustrations bringing Lou’s rhymes and inventions to life. The dynamic duo will be doing events in libraries during the summer.

The Big Friendly Read aims to encourage children to expand their reading by exploring Roald Dahl’s most loved themes across the best contemporary children’s writing, so we’re thrilled that Lou has been selected to take part.

The Summer Reading Challenge is the biggest reading for pleasure programme for primary aged children in libraries. Last year over 800,000 children took part, running in 98% of UK library authorities.

“Slick rhymes and the entertaining drawings.” Review for Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip

The Madhouse family have reviewed Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip by Lou Treleaven and Julia Patton and, as I expected, this one is right up their street!

Layout 1

“Professor McQuark, is a fantastic rolemodel for little girls (and boys) because she’s a very clever and very creative scientist. There are so many picture books featuring princesses, ballerinas and fashionistas that it’s fabulous to see a book encouraging girls to become inventors and (slightly mad !) scientists.
Layout 1
I thought it had a bit of a Cat In The Hat vibe going on, both in terms of the slick rhymes and the entertaining drawings. It’s fun, it’s quirky and it promotes science to girls. It also led on to lots of fun discussions and crafting sessions afterwards, deciding what crazy inventions we could think of and design – what more could you ask for in a picture book?”
Oojamaflip Spread
Our hope for Professor McQuark is that she inspires a new generation of inventors and scientists and encourages children to let their imaginations go wild and dream big. She has already made a start with the Madhouse kids!

Lou Treleaven on BBC Three Counties Radio

Lou Treleaven appeared on Nick Coffer’s show on BBC Three Counties Radio on Monday this week to talk all about her debut picture book Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip

Lou

Nick said: “What stood out to me, as a School Governer and a dad to a girl, is a positive, science role model as the lead character in the book. It’s harder to get girls to engage with science and it’s something that schools are trying to remedy, so having a positive science role model is a really important thing.”

He then contrinued to say: “Consider this book fully endorsed by my two children, I really loved it.”
