‘A great book’ Fab review for Yuck! Said the Yak at From Baby to Brontë

We’ve just spotted a wonderful review for Yuck! said the Yak by Alex English with illustrations by Emma Levey at From Baby to Brontë:

We really enjoyed this story… I like the way that yak turns out not to be a fussy eater, actually, in the end. He’d just been offered the wrong things. He points out that all yaks like grass, and Alfie’s offers, though well-intentioned, were ill-informed. It’s a good lesson for us sometimes, when we think we know best for our children or pupils, to remember not to push or own preferences and assumptions onto others. Sometimes we need to ask the questions and listen rather than just giving what we think is best. We’re all different, right?

A great book. Thanks for the choice, Daddy!’

‘My new favourite!’ Book Monsters goes wild for Mine Mine Mine! Said the Porcupine

A wonderful review for Mine Mine Mine! Said the Porcupine (also on the book list for the Summer Reading Challenge 2017!) by Alex English and illustrated by Emma Levey

‘The writing by Alex English reads so wonderfully. It’s in rhyme and flows like a real classic picture book which almost anyone can confidently read out loud. Full of expression and fun, but with few words so the important message being explained is not lost on young children. I read this out loud a few times and it sounds wonderful! I can’t wait to do so at a storytime soon.’

‘A gentle lesson in sharing’ Terrific review of Mine Mine Mine! Said the Porcupine in Red Reading Hub

Lovely words for Mine Mine Mine! Said the Porcupine by Alex English, illustrated by Emma Levey, in Red Reading Hub.

‘A gentle lesson in sharing delivered in a rhythmic text easy enough to read so that those around Alfie’s age can try it for themselves. Emma Levey portrays the porcupine as hirsute making him appear cuddly rather than a prickly character and he certainly knows how to talk with his eyes.’

“It made me smile. Simple as that.” Charming review for Mine Mine Mine said the Porcupine

Bookmonster Ally has written a lovely review for Mine Mine Mine said the Porcupine by Alex English and Emma Levey, follow up book to Yuck! Said the Yak.

“So, hand in hand, the writing and illustrations in Mine Mine Mine! Said the Porcupine work together to reinforce the importance of friendship and imagination in playtime to children in a fun, colourful and characterful way. Lovely, really lovely. It made me smile. Simple as that. And even if a child plays wonderfully well, doesn’t need to learn to share, is the friendliest chap in school, it’s still a bundle of giggles for anyone to listen to at bedtime or storytime. In honesty, the more books we have that show children how vital friendships are the better.”

Big thumbs up for our Early Readers from Madhouse Family Reviews

We’ve had another great endorsement for our early readers, this time from Madhouse Family Reviews!

Early Readers Collage Image

The Early Readers have retained the atmosphere, fun stories and appealing illustrations of the originals, just in a simplified, more accessible form.

As Pierre already knows the stories from listening to me read him the originals, he’s been really excited about trying to read them himself. The fact that he already knows the essence of the tales increases his confidence and helps him sound out some of the more difficult words.

As both a teacher and a parent, the series, and the accompanying learning resources, get a big thumbs up from me.
We couldn’t ask for a better endorsement! Read the full review here.

“The perfect start to a lifetime of reading…”

Yet another wonderful review for our early readers! This time the praise comes from loyal Maverick supporter, Pam Norfolk, who writes for the Lancashire Evening Post.

Early Readers Collage Image

“An enchanting series of five Early Reader books has been adapted from the original picture books so that young children, who may recognise and already love the stories, can make the important transition from listener to reader. […] Young children just starting to get the hang of sentences and sounds will love reading these funny, engaging stories. […] The perfect start to a lifetime of reading.”

With children across the country back for the new school year, we hope that many of them will find their reading confidence and joy with Maverick early readers! Read the full review here.
