‘Such great value as they do double duty: help children to learn to read and also encourage a love of reading for pleasure’ The Merry Bookworm reviews some new Early Readers!

The Merry Bookworm has just posted a wonderful detailed review for four of our new Early Readers:

Bingo and the Burblies by Steve Howson and illustrated by Gisela Bohorques: Gold Band.   This story really struck a chord with Hugo, who stopped reading at various places to ask why humans would want to hurt the burblies and take away their home.  As a parent, it was a pleasure to see him responding with empathy and concern about saving animals and the planet.

The Underwear Wolf by Clare Helen Walsh and illustrated by Letizia Rizzo: Gold Band.   Hugo thought this story was hilarious!  He loved the fact that Stitch finally made friends with other werewolves and he thought that it was very kind of Stitch to knit them ‘super-stretchy pants’ to keep them warm.  The story gave us lots of opportunities to talk about difference, inclusion and empathy and Hugo has now decided that he wants to dress up as Stitch for World Book Day.

Nanny Ninja by Jenny Jinks and illustrated by Sean Longcroft: White Band.  This is a cleverly-written story that breaks down the older-person stereotype and also introduces the concept of resilience.  Hugo loves super-hero characters and so this story was right up his street.  He understood that you need to keep working hard in order to be good at something and now keeps asking his Nanna if she needs to go for a sleep…

Scary Scott by Katie Dale and illustrated by Irene Montano: Gold Band.  Hugo’s favourite time of year is Hallowe’en and so he was excited to read this before he even opened the cover.  He thought that Scott was brave both to go to the party when he didn’t know anybody and also to face the bullies.  He cheered at the end when the children wanted to remain friends with Scott, even though they had found out he was a ghost; Hugo’s parting shot was “It’s nice to be kind and let everyone join in, Mummy”.

These books are such great value as they do double duty: help children to learn to read and also encourage a love of reading for pleasure, which is a huge win-win in my eyes.  There are also lots in the range – with more due out in March – which means that you can always find stories (from pink band to white) that will interest your young readers; indeed, my daughter, who has been a ‘free reader’ for over a year now, still loves to pick these books up as she is drawn to the superb illustrations and engaging stories.  I only have one complaint – the books have been responsible for a number of arguments over whose turn it is to read them!’

‘Very appealing and we have no hesitation in recommending’ Topmarks gives top marks to Maverick Early Readers!

Education resource site Topmarks has just posted a fantastic review for our Early Readers scheme which reaches 100 titles in May:

There is a fantastic range of titles available, all with really charming illustrations and stories that will appeal to both boys and girls. Each book is well made, with sturdy paperback covers and printed on high-quality paper. We are impressed that the books are colour-coded with the book banding scheme, as developed by the UCL (University College London) Institute of Education, that is widely used in UK schools and libraries. The colours are indicated on the spine, front and back cover of each book, simplifying organisation and reading level identification.

Maverick Publishing have certainly put a lot of thought into planning their Early Readers scheme.

We found the Early Readers guided reading scheme very appealing and we have no hesitation in recommending it.’

‘Great stories which we can all enjoy in equal measure! Bravo!’ Super review for new January Early Readers from Chez L’Abeille!

We have just received a wonderful review for four of our new Early Readers publishing this month from teacher Cathy at Chez L’Abeille:

These new books certainly deliver. One of the things I love about them is that they would be equally at home in the home or in a classroom – so as my day job takes me in and out of many classrooms, I’m going to consider them in that context.

There is a lot of discussion in education currently, about the need for reading books that are “decodable”; that is, closely matched to the phonics knowledge a child has mastered. The recently revised draft Ofsted Inspection Framework makes much of this viewpoint, so many schools I expect, will be looking closely at their reading book shelves and making big decisions about their content. Personally, I think all the Maverick books would be a good addition to any classroom collection.

Maverick have continued to bring children, parents and teachers some great stories which we can all enjoy in equal measure! Bravo!’

Mole in Goal by Amanda Brandon with illustrations by Giusi Capizzi (Orange Book Band/Phase 5 Letters and Sounds). ‘This is a great book in which disability is sensitively explored. The illustrations work well with the text and I particularly liked the way Mole’s point of view is demonstrated, so children can see how he experiences the world.’

The Oojamaflip by Lou Treleaven with illustrations by Julia Patton (Turquoise Band). ‘Given that I sometimes have to hear Year 2 children reading as part of my day job, I think this one may make its way into my work bag!’

Wishker by Heather Pindar with illustrations by Sarah Jennings (Purple Band). ‘The nice twist at the end also brings opportunities for considering what happens next. I also felt the language and structure of the text gave it a sightly more episodic feel – perfect for building up the reading stamina as children move into early chapter books.’

Scary Scott by Katie Dale with illustrations by Irene Montano (Gold Band). ‘I loved this story for it’s humour and pace. The tension builds gradually and there are some great Uh-Oh! moments and cliffhangers along the way. There is also another moral dilemma to discuss – how to do the right thing, even if you may lose out is an important consideration for most 6 and 7 year olds!’

‘I am very impressed with Maverick’s Early Readers’ Parents in Touch reviews some November new titles!

Parents in Touch has reviewed a selection of our Early Readers publishing this month in the orange, green, gold and white bands:

‘I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH MAVERICK’S EARLY READERS – GREAT STORIES, EYE-CATCHING PRESENTATION AND EXCELLENT PROGRESSION MAKES THEM REALLY APPEALING AND A GREAT WAY TO ENCOURAGE A LOVE FOR READING.’

S.I.D. Snake in Disguise (green band)

One thing I always really enjoy about Maverick Books is their attractive presentation, which offers instant child appeal. It’s really good to see that carried forward onto their Early Readers series which have that same high appeal. Decodable at Letters and Sounds Phase 5. Green Book Band stories will now often include opportunities for children to use prediction skills, e.g. to guess what might happen next.’

Greedy Birds (green band)

Maverick Books are excellent at bringing us really good stories and their Early Readers are no exception with superb stories from top class authors. The original text of this story, as with others, has been modified by the author to be an Early Reader without losing any of the original appeal.’

A Knit and a Knot (orange Band)

Children will enjoy this lively story about determination, helpfulness and kindness.’

Mr Tash (orange band)

A hilarious story with super illustrations that makes reading a really enjoyable experience for children. Both the Green and the Orange Book Banded books include quiz questions to assess children’s understanding of their reading.’

‘Kid tested, teacher approved 5 stars!’ Book Addict samples some of our Early Readers publishing this month!

Book Addict has posted some lovely reviews, including from pupil readers, for four of the ten Early Readers we are publishing this month:

A lovely story with eye-catching illustrations, The Freezosaurus will appeal to dinosaur lovers everywhere.

Mahdi, age 8 says: When I read the first sentences, it started to hook me in.  I wanted to know what was going to happen to Freddie and Frozo.  I loved it so much I read it twice! I also really liked the cover and the title.’

‘Stunning illustrations and colourful vocabulary bring the Wild West to life in Cara the Cowgirl

Anjum, age 8 says: I liked this book because Cara is brave and faces Black Jake the robber.  She can cook and even knit a scarf while riding her horse too!  It’s funny too when Cara catches Black Jake with her lasso.’

‘This amazing tale is very modern and up-to-date in its story of Stella who is different from everyone else but not for the obvious reason of being in a wheelchair.  She is actually a superhero who has the ability to fly!

8 year-old Roxie had this to say about Shooting Star: There was a girl named Stella who couldn’t walk but she could fly! She was a superhero! I really liked this book because Stella was just a normal girl, then she turned in to Shooting Star.  She saved the day and everyone was happy. I think everyone should read this book because it was just so good!’

‘This is a fantastic tale of friendship, determination and resilience.

Mahdi, age 8 had this to say about Rickety Rocket: Stacey had bullies who always picked on her and made fun of her old rocket. She felt bad but in the end she proves that bullies never win.  I really liked this book and wish I had a rocket like Stacey’s.

Kid tested, teacher approved 5 stars!’  See all 70 of the Early Readers and download free activity packs and audio files on our new website here
