My Book Corner gives a big thumbs up for new Early Readers!

Sarah at My Book Corner has posted some great reviews for two of our new blue and yellow band Early Readers published last month:

Clare Helen Walsh’s (The Aerodynamics of Biscuits) lovely story of King Carl and his wonderful day out at the fair will be a joy for all ages to read. With counting sequences and beautiful illustrations by Marina Pessarrodona, each page is bursting with colour.’

‘This is a super story to celebrate how one person doing a good deed can mean the world to another. Patricia Reagan’s illustrations and Clare Helen Walsh’s wonderful words take the young reader on Jim’s story as he helps the fisherman, only to be given what he wanted all along, in return.’

Many thanks, Sarah! Read the full review here.

‘A deliciously appealing set of banded reading books’ Chez L’Abeille reviews new Early Readers!

Primary school teacher Cathy at Chez L’Abeille recently reviewed two of our new yellow and blue band Early Readers publishing this month:

One of the longest standing debates in the teaching of reading must be the reading scheme vs. “real books” one. Over nearly 35 years of being involved in the teaching of reading, this one has rumbled and rumbled. Being a realist, I was always aware that the barrier to reading a published picture book independently lay in the complexity of the written words and this remains the main stumbling block.

Maverick have grasped this nettle and are building a deliciously appealing set of banded reading books which combine both the aesthetics of a picture book, yet have the graded vocabulary required to match a child’s developing decoding skills. The colour bands used to grade the books are derived from the “Book Band” system, developed by the Institute of Education, and used widely in schools to match books across the many existing schemes. I’ve been a long-standing devotee of the book bands, as they give teachers a short hand system for judging the relative difficulty of a book. In my day job I work with primary schools and this includes the moderation of reading assessments in Reception and Year. At times like this, being able to judge a book by its cover comes in very handy!’

About Jim and the Big Fish (yellow band) by Clare Helen Welsh she said:

It is a charming story with a seaside setting…. There are simple sentences and speech bubbles which feature easily decodable words, perfect for the developing reader. The usual quiz is at the end of the book to support recall skills.’

About Little Scarlet’s Big Fibs (blue band) by Katie Dale she said:

‘This is based on the traditional Red Riding Hood story but with a great twist that will get children laughing! There is an increase in the number of sentences on the page, which will build reading stamina, but the reader is still supported by decodable words to help fluency. Small illustrated clues also give the reader information about just what Little Scarlet is up to and why Granny isn’t getting her treats.

Once again the high production values and quality of the writing shine through in both books and I think these are a great addition to the Maverick Early Reader scheme.’

Thanks, Cathy!

‘Perfect for home and school’: Pink band Early Reader gets a thumbs up from My Book Corner!

Our Early Readers are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds. Our latest fan is My Book Corner which recently reviewed pink band Early Reader Meg and Rat and Puff! Puff! Puff! by Cath Jones and illustrated by Adam Pryce.

These two stories come in one book, part of Maverick’s Early Reader scheme. They are banded as Maverick’s Book Band Pink, which is the first level in Maverick’s scale of reading difficulty.

What I really like about these two stories, is that they are just that – stories. They are told in very few words, with the story being told by Adam’s Pryce’s delightful illustrations too.

‘Meg and Rat’ – Children will love this story. It has a hunt for treasure, a lost map and a great twist, all told in very few words. This story is cleverly written with repetition of sentences, with just one word different. The unexpected end made my daughter chuckle.

‘Puff! Puff! Puff!’ – The repetition of ‘Puff! Puff! Puff!’ throughout this story is great fun. I like how each character’s name rhymes with the type of animal they are. My daughter was fascinated with the last page and studied it for ages.

Each story is complemented with a page focusing on one letter and its formation. There is another page with words to familiarise the reader to, high frequency words, tips for reading the books and a suggested fun activity.

The Early Readers are perfect to share with your child at home, as well as for use in schools.’

My Book Corner gives top marks to Blue Band Early Reader The Smart Hat!

My Book Corner posted a fantastic review for blue band Early Reader The Smart Hat by Cath Jones and illustrated by Paul Nicholls:

‘I imagine that children who are reading this themselves, will really enjoy the story. Having worked in schools myself and sat with children listening to them read, I know only too well that some of the stories in early readers can be lacking. Not The Smart Hat – it has the plot of a picture book story, but told in a small number of easy to read words.

Paul Nicholls’s illustrations are bright, fun and colourful. I especially like the night time pictures with all the nocturnal animals, with the beautiful night sky.

The Early Reader has a focus of the ‘ow’ and ‘oo’ phonemes. The book is graded as Blue band on Maverick’s Book Band scale. There is a great quiz at the end of The Smart Hat, to help promote discussion of what happened in the story.’

‘A great first insight into the Stone Age’ Thumbs up for Purple Band Early Reader Stone Underpants

Tara Potter (Hickman) posted a wonderful review of purple band Early Reader Stone Underpants by Rebecca Lisle and illustrated by Richard Watson on her blog:

Children giggled at the title and continued giggling all the way to the end. This is a great first insight into the Stone Age and contains many useful comments on properties of different materials. Beautifully illustrated. Obviously, any book that mentions ‘bottoms’ is going to be a hit with this age group!
Freshen up your Purple Banded Readers from www.maverickbooks.co.uk – all colour bands available!’

Thanks, Tara!

‘Simple, but also simply fun’ The Bookbag’s wonderful review for Early Reader Cool Duck and Lots of Hats!

The Bookbag recently published a great review of pink band Early Reader Cool Duck and Lots of Hats by Elizabeth Dale and illustrated by Giusi Capizzi. Thanks, Sam!

cool-duck-lots-of-hats-er-lr-jpeg

‘Although incredibly simple, Dale’s stories are also a little daft so they are still fun. Capizzi is able to capture this sense of lightness in the drawings. This makes a book that could have felt like my first academic text, actually feel like my first special book just for me.

For parents who are worried about how they can help their child develop their reading, Maverick have included a section for both stories about the book’s aims, what the important words are and the type of questions you may want to ask. All children will develop at different rates and the fact that all the Early Learner books are part of a staggered progression means that you can buy the book that suits your child. I can certainly recommend Cool Cat and Lots of Hats as a very first emerging reader book; it is simple, but also simply fun.’
