This year’s reading challenge is linking up with the global year-long Roald Dahl celebrations honouring the beloved storyteller. The 72 Books selected for the challenge have been chosen based on 6 key Dahl themes including, invention, friendship, adventure, langwitch (wordplay), champions and mischief. So we can see why Professor McQuark stood out!

Professor McQuark and the Oojamaflip features a female scientist and inventor who creates a wonderful device called the Oojamaflip. It wins over the crowds at the town’s Science Fair but the question everyone is asking is, what does an Oojamaflip do?

The story is written by debut author, Lou Treleaven, in brilliantly crafted rhyme and encourages all children to be inventive and follow their dreams. British illustrator, Julia Patton has brought her wonderful sense of quirkiness and charm to the illustrations bringing Lou’s rhymes and inventions to life. The dynamic duo will be doing events in libraries during the summer.

The Big Friendly Read aims to encourage children to expand their reading by exploring Roald Dahl’s most loved themes across the best contemporary children’s writing, so we’re thrilled that Lou has been selected to take part.

The Summer Reading Challenge is the biggest reading for pleasure programme for primary aged children in libraries. Last year over 800,000 children took part, running in 98% of UK library authorities.
