Another stellar review for Maverick Early Readers!

We have just received some wonderful comments from Caroline Smith, a retired senior early years teacher and former Heart of Hawick Children’s Book Award Coordinator:

Layout 1

These were a great success. They cheered up my grand-daughter, who was finding the ones in class rather dull.

These books were ideal for an early reader. The stories are fun, complemented well by the illustrations which greatly enrich the simple stories.  The vocabulary is well structured, and not contrived, which is often the case with phonic-based text.

I was very impressed with the introductory pages which enabled key words in the story to be identified in advance, (great to use the little pictures) and ‘tricky’ words practiced. I also liked the letter-tracing pages, -although many schools now do the looped ‘k’ and an alternative to glue in place might be useful.
The books are a good size for small hands, and look more like ‘real’ books than a reading scheme which therefore builds self-esteem.

They were used in tandem with ‘Jolly Phonics’ and another well-known reading scheme, and these books were much preferred by my tester.  This was due to the interest and enjoyment level, and the satisfaction of reading and understanding the story instantly, partly due to the illustrations.  Because they were funny, she approached the embedded text with anticipation.
Above all, these books are fun. My tester wants to re-read them and goes back especially to ‘Bam-boo’ and ‘Can I have my ball back?”
I am passing them on to the Primary one teacher with a recommendation to buy the set as enrichment Readers.
Well done again, Maverick.  You have a knack of knowing what children want to read.’

Thank you, Caroline!
