There would be no ‘picture’ in ‘picture book’ without an illustrator.  At Maverick we are lucky to work with some fantastic illustrators that add their own passion and imagination to a text, bringing it to life.

Abi Tompkins

Illustrator

Abigail currently lives in London and works as an illustrator, she studied traditional animation and film production at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. She loves to draw and always has a sketchbook on hand. Abigail gets her inspiration from everything around her and the people she meets along the way.

Adriana Puglisi

Illustrator

Adriana, known as Adribel, was born in Argentina and since 1995 she has lived in Granada, Spain with her husband, son, daughter, two dogs, a Guinea Pig, a little bird, and several fish.

She has always drawn, and stared her career in architecture, but soon decided she had made the wrong choice.  Instead she wanted to tell stories! So she abandoned architecture and began to study drawing humorous cartoons and caricatures, in a private school in Buenos Aires.

Alex Willmore

Alex is a Designer/ Illustrator living in Northampton with a passion for character design. After completing a degree in Illustration for Children’s Publishing at the North Wales School of Art and Design, Alex went on to work both in-house as a greeting card designer and Illustrator and freelance illustrating books and surface pattern.

    Andrea did an apprenticeship as Graphic Designer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.  She has been a freelance illustrator since 2011.  I Wish I’d Been Born a Unicorn is her first illustrated book published in the UK.

    Barbara Bakos

    Illustrator

    Barbara grew up on the suburb of Budapest next to a little forest and can’t remember a time when she wasn’t drawing. She graduated as an animation director at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest but she always knew that she wanted to spend more time as an illustrator. She has a big passion for creating worlds with her characters, making up how they work together within an atmosphere, what they feel, and what the story is behind them.

    Now she lives between England and Hungary and she always misses her big ginger cat when she is not with her, just like her Johnny Cash discs. She works hard to develop her work, with lots of ideas in her head and a lot of pens in her pocket.

    Ben Whitehouse

    Illustrator

    Ben Whitehouse is an illustrator born and raised in Birmingham UK. He recently lived in Vienna, Austria for a year, but is now back in the UK and based in Chepstow where he lives with his lovely girlfriend, Yvonne, and their crazy border collie named Sparrow. Ben works at Aardman Features and has previously worked in the animation industry as a character designer, animator, and stop motion puppet maker before finding his feet within the world of illustration.

    Catalina Echeverri

    Illustrator

    Catalina Echeverri is originally from Bogota, Colombia, and she speaks English, Spanish and Italian. She studied graphic design in Milan, Italy and completed an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Arts (ARU). She loves to draw all of the time, and takes her sketchbook everywhere with her. Although she delights in coming up with new stories for the characters in her sketchbooks she finds illustrating other people’s texts an enriching and rewarding experience.

    Chris Jevons

    Illustrator

    Chris Jevons is a children’s book illustrator represented internationally by The Bright Agency. He lives and works in the lovely Spa town of Harrogate North Yorkshire, UK. With a background in design and animation, he pursued his passion for children’s books and joined Bright in 2011.

    Chris has illustrated picture books, board books and fiction series. He illustrates digitally using a Cintiq drawing tablet and Apple iMac. He is inspired by picture books, films, tv and nature.

    Chris has recently started growing vegetables on his new allotment. He plans to grow lots of fruit and vegetables including a bonkers! sized beetroot.

    Duncan Beedie

    Illustrator

    Duncan is a freelance illustrator with a background in character animation. More recently he has been working in children’s literature both as an illustrator and an author.  The first book that he has illustrated for Maverick, Pirates Don’t Drive Diggers was published in May 2015.  His debut author/illustrator book ‘The Bear Who Stared’ is released in February 2016, published by Templar.

    Emma Randall

    Emma Randall is an illustrator from Bristol. She loves bright colours, patterns and creating quirky little characters. Emma has loved drawing for as long as she can remember and works from her barn studio in a collective called “Hullo Creative’, with graphic designer husband, Max. Emma also enjoys growing vegetables, reading and cycling her blue bike around the North Somerset countryside.

    Evgenia Golubeva

    Evgenia Golubeva is originally from Siberia. She graduated as a writer and director of animation films in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. She lived in Italy and France. She does love traveling! Now Evgenia lives in UK – in magical Stratford-upon-Avon. She writes and draws for preschool TV shows, apps and books. In her freetime she makes ceramic cat-vases and bear-bowls. She is obsessed with everything cute and loves crafts. She is always trying new media – watercolour, gouache, ink, digital. She used pencils to create illustrations for ‘As Quiet As A Mouse’.

      Gabriele Antonini

      Gabriele has a degree in Industrial Design with a major in Communication. Since 2008, he has been working as an illustrator of children books, as well as a character designer and graphic artist.       Gina Maldonado

      Illustrator

      Gina is a Colombian illustrator living in the bustling city of Hong Kong with her partner and 2 cats. She studied architecture and interior design – in Colombia, Mexico and Italy!- but decided that creating cuddly and cute animals suited her personality better. She loves to draw all kinds of animals and flowers with bold colours mixed with hand-drawn textures.

      When she’s not drawing she’s travelling the world, exploring exotic places and taking pictures of animals.

        Hannah Marks

        Hannah is a self-taught illustrator and designer; she lives with her husband, three children, a bonkers cat and two nutty gerbils in Hertfordshire, UK. Hannah uses Photoshop from sketch to finished artwork, incorporating textures, patterns and natural brushes for a hand-drawn, organic look. Hamster Sitter Wanted is her first illustrated picture book to be published in the UK.

        James Lent

        James was born in 1986 and lives in East Yorkshire with his wife and son, who are a big inspiration to his life and art. James is a self taught artist who transformed a childhood hobby into a love and passion after growing up with many magical tales by the likes of Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake, and in later years, the fantastical worlds of Middle Earth and Hogwarts.

        James is very versatile and his work appeals to a wide range of ages, with a simple but striking style.  He uses his imagination and creativity to bring a picture to life and target the intended audience.

        Julia Patton

        Julia’s studio is a rustic woodshed in a field in the wilds of Northumberland.  She is an award-winning author and illustrator with over 25 picture books and educational titles published internationally.

        With a BA (Hons) in Textile Design & Embroidery from Manchester Metropolitan University and an MA in Illustration from The University of Edinburgh, her work is a combination of collage, traditional drawing and digital media.  When not illustrating you will find her building tree houses, growing vegetables and hand making sketchbooks to fill with new stories, characters and adventures…

          Kate Chappell

          Kate is a freelance illustrator living and working from her home in Lincolnshire, she graduated from Falmouth University in 2013 with a degree in illustration. She loves working with paints, pencil crayon and digital media to create her work which always maintains a sense of naivety. Kate is inspired mostly by the many different characters she meets, be they human, animal or imaginary!

          Kate Daubney

          Kate lives by the sea in Sunny North Devon, England with her partner Roger and her scruffy sidekick, Taz the dog. After graduating with a degree in illustration from Falmouth University, she has worked on numerous children’s books using a mixture of both digital and traditional media, to create her colourful and quirky illustrations, and has been published in the U.S.A, Australia, Japan and most of Europe. When she’s not busy illustrating she loves nothing more than riding her bike or taking a walk across the local beach, where Taz the dog enjoys chasing the seagulls!

          Kimberley Scott

          Illustrator

          Kimberley Scott is a professional Illustrator and Designer, working from her home studio in London. Kimberley likes to dip her inken pen in a variety of projects including childrens books, greetings cards, puzzles, stationery and calligraphy.

          With a fascination for line and a slight obsession with all things inky Kimberley has developed her own quirky yet somewhat traditional illustrative style. She starts all her creations by hand, using a mix of pencil, pen and ink, and then either moves to her trusty Mac or takes to the freedom of watercolours to bring her characters and illustrations to life. Kimberley loves to delve into an imaginative world, with pattern, detail and a slight ‘skewiff’ essence being key to her work.

          Lucy Fleming

          Lucy Fleming lives and works in a small town in Cheshire with an animator and a little black cat. She has been an avid doodler and bookworm since early childhood, drawing everyday, bringing characters and stories to life. She never dreamed that illustrating would be her job! When not at her desk, Lucy lives to be outdoors in the sunshine with a hot cup of tea – doodling, of course.

            Lucy Tapper

            Lucy Tapper is an illustrator and entrepreneur. Lucy started creating and developing her unique product ideas in her head whilst watching her young children play daily in their greenhouse. This is where she first came up with the idea for Hedgehugs.  Her and her husband, Steve, now run a successful online shop, which sells Lucy’s beautiful artwork as personalised gifts.

            Maddie Frost

            Maddie Frost grew up in Massachusetts and attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design for animation. Her love of storytelling led her to children’s books and she could never imagine doing anything else. Maddie works by scanning different paper and painted swatches to digitally cut into pieces and composite into one image. She loves to use interesting color palettes, textures and shapes that always feel very intuitive. When she is not working on picture books, she can be found drawing on the couch or in the grass! She lives with her husband and rescued pup, Winnie, in New Hampshire.

            Marta Costa

            Illustrator

            Marta was born in Barcelona. When she was a child she never played with dolls, her favourite toys were coloured pencils and a little kitchen. Today her interest for cooking has decreased but she draws a lot! She studied Graphic Design and worked as a Graphic designer for 18 years. During all these years, she discovered that her real vocation was illustration and, in 2005, she started-up her own company illustrating children’s t-shirts. She did a Masters in EINA School of Barcelona, and learnt as many illustration techniques as she could. Since 2007 she has worked as a freelance illustrator for most publishing companies in Spain, US and the UK.  She sees herself as very lucky that she managed to turn her hobby into her job and hopes to continue drawing until she is lovely grandmother.

            Richard Watson

            Illustrator

            Richard Watson is an Illustrator based in North Lincolnshire. He studied for a degree in Illustration at Lincoln University and has been working on children’s books since graduating in 2003. He has worked for a wide range of clients around the world, producing artwork for children’s picture books, doodle books, sticker and colouring books as well as many others.

            He is an avid reader and collector of many different kinds of books, and from a young age has always been fascinated and inspired by the stories and artwork contained within the pages of a good book.

            Although his work is mainly produced digitally he is also a keen sketcher and painter and a few of his other interests include photography, wildlife and music.

            Sara Sanchez

            Sara was born in Madrid and is the youngest of four, since she was little she has always been drawing everything around her. She also wrote stories (some full of spelling mistakes) and also did some modeling with playdough of famous television contests in the 90´s.

            But when she became an adult she left all that behind and had to work without creativity filling her time.  But by destiny she started art school and met wonderful people who made her remember the things that made her dream.

            So today she spends her day in the studio with the radio music in the background, with her pet rabbit sleeping near her feet while she draws.

              Sarah Jennings is a children’s book illustrator based in London.

              Sophia Touliatou

              Sophia has studied Graphic Design, but works as an illustrator, doing mostly children books -many of which have gained merits and awards.
              You can find her work in Greece, Uk, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, United States, Australia and South Korea.

              Recently she made her first attempt as an author, with her version of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and hopes one day to see it in print.

              She’s always happier when a dog or cat is around and strongly believes that life begins after coffee :)

                Susan Batori

                Illustrator

                Susan Batori lives in Budapest, Hungary with her soul mate, Robert and with her cat, Kamilla. She studied graphic design at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest. She worked as an art director at DDB Advertising Agency then she noticed that drawing hilarious characters was much more fun. Since 2013, Susan has been working as a freelance children’s book illustrator. Humour is the one thing in her studio that she could not live without.

                Tim Budgen

                Tim was born in Surrey in 1977, and is a freelance illustrator and Art teacher. For much of his life he has been scribbling down ideas and can usually be found with a pencil in one hand and a sketchbook in the other!

                Tim has a real passion for character design and storytelling. His illustration work has been described as ‘story telling with whimsical charm, warmth and humour’ and he’d like to think that is pretty true!

                Tim lives with wife by the sea on Hayling Island.

                Vanina Starkoff

                Illustrator

                Vanina was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1981.

                She graduated as a graphic designer at the University of Buenos Aires in 2005. She trained in the art of illustrating children’s books with José Sanabria for five years in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied at the same school with the illustrator Oscar Rojas and Ana Morra. She attended the picture book workshop with the illustrator Gianni de Conno in Milan, Italy.

                Her first picture book “Dancing in the Clouds” was finalist in the “III International Compostela Award for Picture Books” in Spain. Her second picture book “Red Ball” received an honorable mention in the “A la orilla del viento” picture book contest in Mexico in 2010. Her third picture book “Flowers in the Desert” also received another honorable mention in the “Invenciones International Picture Book Contest” in Mexico in 2011. Since 2007 she gives workshops of illustration.

                Villie Karabatzia

                Villie Karabatzia was born in Athens, studied illustration at Ornerakis School of Applied Art and work as an illustrator since 2008.
                She loves creating playful characters, interesting compositions and giving emphasis on color.  Her style is fresh, whimsical, cute and funny. Her ideas comes not only from every creative thought her mentor cat confides to her, but also her personal experiences, memories, dreams and wishes. Her favorite children’s story and animated cartoon are ‘The Little Prince’ and ‘Swan Lake’.
