Granny Mutton visits Blenheim Primary School!

Amanda EventReception classes at Blenheim Primary School learned about some creative sheep when author Amanda Brandon took along her picture book ‘A Scarf and a Half’ featuring knitting loving Granny Mutton and her grandson Little Lionel.

Amanda said, “We talked about the story, where wool comes from and what we could use it for. I also had a peek at the school’s fabulous new library which fundraisers had worked hard to pack with great books. It looked well worth the wait.”

Amanda Brandon’s mural and a half!

Amanda Brandon Jacqson Diego 2nd draft_A3

Amanda Brandon, author of ‘A Scarf and a Half‘, visited Jacqson Diego Story Emporium to create the biggest scarf mural the world has ever seen!

Amanda read the story of Little Lionel and his Granny to the children and then they enjoyed plenty of fun scarf and knitting related activities! Amanda said that the children most enjoyed seeing just how many people could be wrapped in ‘Granny Mutton’s scarf – a bright and colourful scarf and a half knitted by Amanda herself!

The children then all helped create a beautiful and colourful wall mural of a long and twisty scarf.

Jacqson Diego Story Emporium is a fantastic addition to Westcliff-on-Sea run by wonderful staff who are dedicated to encouraging children to get excited about reading and providing them with a safe, comfortable and fun environment in which to explore the world of books.

Amanda said: “I received a warm welcome from Jacqson Diego on a very cold snowy day! It is a great place for children to discover books and be creative.”

Buy A Scarf and a Half at your local bookshop or buy it online here.

Amanda Brandon’s second book, ‘A Box of Socks’ will be released May 2015.

Tracy Gunaratnam’s preposterous visit to Dulwich Books

A3Tracy Gunaratnam visited Dulwich Books last Saturday to read her first published picture book ‘Preposterous Rhinoceros.’ Tracy is one of Maverick’s newest authors and we are very excited about her book and expect it to become a favourite pick for bedtime in many households!

Tracy said about her first book event:

‘I had a lovely time at Dulwich Books, the staff were so helpful and  the children were great. The children were very knowledgeable about jungle animals  and happily  joined in with a, rather preposterous, jungle animal guessing game! After the story it was a joy to watch everyone take part in the Preposterous Rhinoceros colouring activity.’

We’d like to say thank you to everyone at Dulwich Books who have now hosted two of our authors and did a wonderful job on both days.

Make sure to get your own copy of Preposterous Rhinoceros either from your local bookshop or buy online here.

Alex started the morning by reading one of her favourite picture books from her childhood, The Tiger who came to Tea by Judith Kerr. All in all the event was a great success and we thank Dulwich Books for all their hard work. Alex’s second book, Pirates don’t drive Diggers will be released in May.

A Scarf and a Half is knitting up a storm!

Amanda Brandon Jacqson Diego 2nd draft_A3Amanda Brandon’s book A Scarf and a Half has earned high praise this week. In anticipation of her book event with them later this month, Jacqson Diego Story Emporium in Westcliff on Sea, has named A Scarf and a Half ‘one of the best picture books of the year.’

Amanda Brandon will be visiting the Story Emporium on Saturday 31st January. She will do a reading and join in with activities inspired by A Scarf and a Half. There may even be an appearance by the famous scarf and a half she knitted herself…

Jacqson Diego Story Emporium at its heart is a bookshop, but the wonderful people behind the emporium are dedicated to encouraging children to love reading by creating a free and comfortable space for them to explore books.

“Whether it’s story time, an author visit, book clubs or a project with a school, all of our activities are led by the interests of the children taking part and we maintain a flexible, unpressurised approach, often using creative play and arts and crafts as a means for children to develop their opinions and ideas about a book or situation. We also use discussion, creative questioning, flights of fancy, mismatched subjects, and the power of cake.”

A Scarf and Half is already a favourite at storytime and we hope the children will enjoy a visit from Amanda. Maybe she’ll encourage a love of knitting as well…
