Mouse in the House! Evgenia Golubeva visits Waterstones, Stratford-Upon-Avon

Evegenia Waterstones event

It’s not just our authors who like to get our and share their books, but our illustrators too! Evgenia Golubeva visited her local Waterstones in Stratford-upon-Avon to share the story she illustrated: As Quiet as a Mouse, written by Karen Owen.

Evgenia read the story, played games and taught the children how to draw elephants and mice. Evgenia believes that creativity in children is very important, she said:

“I think the best way for children to get creatively involved is to actually get creative yourself […] I think it helps all of us to bond and to develop creativity. All humans are creative.”

A Triple attack book launch!

Last night we celebrated the book birthdays of three authors: Clare Helen Welsh, Karen Owen and Rebecca Colby.IMG_6398

They were celebrating the releases of their latest books:

Aerodynamics of Biscuits, As Quiet as a Mouse and It’s Raining Bats and Frogs.

All three authors are members of the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators and have been supporting each other every step of the way through their publishing journeys so it was fitting that they all celebrated the publication of their hard work together.

We joined the three talented authors at Daunt Books in Chelsea for drinks, nibbles and of course books! It was a lovely setting for the event and there was a very large and merry crowd! It was lovely to see so many children running around as well!

The authors said a few words of thanks (which got a bit emotional in places) and also held a raffle with great prizes, including signed books, author visits and query meetings with agents and editors.

Congratulations again to Clare, Karen and Rebecca for their wonderful books and thank you for organising a lovely event!

Happy International Literacy Day from Preposterous Rhinoceros!

Yesterday Tracy Gunaratnam attended Croydon Library’s International Literacy Day event. She read her story Preposterous Rhinoceros which is all about encouraging children to persevere with reading and the joy of reading a book by yourself for the very first time.

The children were very enthusiastic and had plenty of advice for Preposterous Rhinoceros on how he might go about reading a book. Tracy played the hairy, scary guessing game with them and they joined in with a jungle sing along!

Maverick author day

Last Thursday we had a rather lovely time at the Maverick studio. We invited some of our authors to the studio to have an ideas session on how to best run events and increase the visibility of our books. Usually we only get to see our authors once a year (and even then it’s only one-to-one) so it was lovely to see not just one, but six of our authors on the same day!

Our authors are all part of the Maverick family, so we like to involve them in some of our plans and decisions and also help them with their own goals. Book events are very important to us and some of our authors are very skilled at putting on a top event, so we invited them to share that experience.

We discussed how events differ depending on location, so a school event will be very different from a bookshop event. We discussed how picture books do not only need to shared with young children but can also be used for an effective session with 11 year olds. And we spent a very fun half an hour coming up with different games and craft activities which can be associated with each book. We have some very imaginative authors indeed!

For a couple of the authors, the most exciting part of the day would have been receiving a copy of their book. Karen Owen received her first copy of her new book As Quiet as a Mouse which will be out next September, while Heather Pindar received a mock up version of the first ever picture book Strictly No Crocs which will be released next January.

Finally we talked about a very exciting new Maverick initiative which  for now will stay under wraps, but you can expect an announcement very soon…

Thanks to all of our authors who came to see us last week, we hope you had a great time!

Amanda said: “the book reading went very well. It was great to be back at Maldon Library and to see so many children enjoying the Summer Reading Challenge.”

Jungle sing alongs with Tracy Gunaratnam!

Earlier today, Tracy Gunaratnam visited Waterstones in Croydon to share her story Preposterous Rhinoceros.

Starting things off with a jungle sing along (is there any other way to start a party?), Tracy got the children very excited about joining P. Rhino in his jungle world. They then played a Hairy Scary Guessing Game before hearing the hilarious and touching story of Preposterous Rhinoceros.
